{"id":1049,"date":"2020-04-05T09:01:57","date_gmt":"2020-04-05T08:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/towncryyers.com\/?p=1049"},"modified":"2020-04-05T09:02:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-05T08:02:00","slug":"trump-administration-allows-companies-to-break-pollution-laws-during-coronavirus-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/towncryyers.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/05\/trump-administration-allows-companies-to-break-pollution-laws-during-coronavirus-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Allows Companies To Break Pollution Laws During Coronavirus Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Oliver Milman and Emily Holden<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Extraordinary move signals to US companies that they will not face any\nsanctions for polluting the air or water<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has suspended its enforcement\nof environmental laws during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, signaling to\ncompanies they will not face any sanction for polluting the air or water of\nAmericans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an extraordinary move that has stunned former EPA officials, the Trump\nadministration said it will not expect compliance with the routine monitoring\nand reporting of pollution and won\u2019t pursue penalties for breaking these rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polluters will be able to ignore environmental laws as long as they can\nclaim in some way these violations were caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This memo amounts to a nationwide moratorium\non enforcing the nation\u2019s environmental laws and is an abdication of EPA\u2019s\nresponsibility to protect the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A letter sent to the EPA by Giles and a number of other environmental\nadvocates states that while it may be \u201creasonable in limited circumstances\u201d to\nrelax certain enforcement during the crisis, the blanket waiver of\nenvironmental requirements poses a danger to the American public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is particular concern over air pollution emitted by industrial\nfacilities, which are predominantly located in communities with large numbers\nof low-income people and people of color. Covid-19 attacks the respiratory\nsystem, with its spread causing states to scramble for more ventilators to\nprevent thousands of infected people from dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The air pollution that industrial plants will not have to monitor damages\nthe respiratory system, which is especially dangerous for already at-risk\npopulations who may also become infected with Covid-19, which attacks the\nlungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExcusing the potential release of excess toxic air pollutants and other\npollution that exacerbates asthma, breathing difficulty and cardiovascular\nproblems in the midst of a pandemic that can cause respiratory failure is\nirresponsible from a public health perspective,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not about reporting and paperwork,\u201d said Eric Schaeffer, executive\ndirector of the Environmental Integrity Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re flying blind because you\u2019re not monitoring for pollution and the\npublic\u2019s flying blind because you\u2019re not reporting it, a lot of problems that\ncome to light when you do those things are going to stay hidden,\u201d Schaeffer\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one example, oil refineries will not be compelled to report on and\nreduce their carcinogenic benzene emissions.
