Republic of Chad, a member of the Multinational Joint Task\nForce (MNJTF) against the terrorist groups, Boko Haram and Islamic State\u2019s West\nAfrica Province (ISWAP), has issued Nigeria and Niger Republic an April 22\nultimatum to reoccupy territories Chadian troops seized from Boko Haram because\nit will withdraw its forces from those locations by that date. President of\nChad Idris Deby said he had warned the two countries that his forces would move\nout of the bases seized from the jihadists by April 22, regardless of whether\ntheir armed forces moved in or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking in an interview, Derby said his troops deployed to\nfight jihadists in the Lake Chad region and the Sahel will no longer take part\nin military operations outside national borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur troops have died for Lake Chad and the Sahel. From\ntoday, no Chadian soldiers will take part in a military mission outside Chad,\u201d\nhe told national TV in Arabic. His remarks were broadcast in French on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chadian president\u2019s position depicted widening cracks in\nthe coalition, which he said was the outcome of poor commitment to the war\nagainst insurgency by other coalition partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIdris Deby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Derby had led his troops in a counterattack that decimated\nabout 1,000 Boko Haram fighters, prompting the leader of the terror group,\nAbubakar Shakau, to appeal to his fighters not to be deterred by the onslaught\nagainst them by the Chadian troops. Chadian armed forces said they had wound up\nthe operation against Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region, saying 52 soldiers\nhave been lost and a thousand jihadists killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The operation was launched after 98 Chadian soldiers were\nkilled in a Boko Haram raid on a base at Bohoma in the lake\u2019s marshlands on\nMarch 23, the biggest one-day military loss in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The four countries bordering the lake \u2013 Nigeria, Chad,\nNiger, and Cameroon \u2013 and Benin Republic had in 2015 set up the military\ncoalition, MNJTF, to fight Boko Haram. But Chad, which has some of the\nstrongest armed forces in the Sahel, showed frustration with the MNJTF\nfollowing the Bohoma losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cChad is alone in shouldering all the burden of the war\nagainst Boko Haram,\u201d Idris publicly complained last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In announcing the end of the offensive on Thursday, the army\nsaid its troops had expelled jihadists from Chadian soil and had advanced deep\ninto Niger and Nigeria. Derby said he had warned those countries that his\nforces would move out of bases seized there from the jihadists by April 22,\nwhether their armed forces moved in or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Army spokesman, Colonel Azem Bermendoa Agouna, told the AFP\nnews agency that 52 troops died during the operation, which was launched on\nMarch 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA thousand terrorists have been killed, 50 motorised canoes\nhave been destroyed,\u201d Agouna said, referring to a large boat also called a\npirogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Agouna said the operation, which was launched after nearly\n100 soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram attack last month, ended on Wednesday\nafter the armed fighters were forced out of Chad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
It was the first official snapshot of the outcome of\nOperation Bohoma Anger, launched after about 98 soldiers were killed on March\n23 in the deadliest-ever attack by Boko Haram on the country\u2019s military forces.\nThe armed group had mounted a seven-hour assault on a Chadian army base at Bohoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chadian expedition and declarations of Derby triggered a\nflurry of activities in Nigerian military circles. The Defence Headquarters\nsaid on Tuesday that Chad would not take the glory of Nigeria\u2019s gallantry and\ncontributions to the war against insurgency. Coordinator of the Directorate of\nDefence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche, said Nigeria was not\nslowing the pace of the war, as claimed by Derby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enenche stated, \u201cTo say that we are slowing down the war is\nnot true at all. By our mandate, you can go in pursuit of insurgents and\ncriminals for 25 kilometres without consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor His Excellency (President Derby) to say that is not\nright. They are playing their part of the game. It\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enenche said Nigeria fought in Sierra Leone and other\ncountries where it left a legacy of restoration of democratic rule and\n\u201csomebody wants to take glory with 30 men. When you are in a situation like\nthis and it is coming to an end, some people will be trying to take the glory.\nIt is a distraction for a military to say I\u2019m taking the glory. We have done so\nmuch there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Army Spokesman Col Sagir Musa had issued a statement on\nFriday debunking claims that foreign troops were occupying Nigerian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Musa stated, \u201cThe Nigerian Army\u2019s attention has been drawn\nto the statement now circulating on social media claiming the security and\ndefence forces of Chad are deeply stationed in the islands of Niger and\nNigeria, waiting to handover to the respective armies of these friendly\nnations. Nigerian Army wishes to state that there is no Chadian or any other\nforeign country\u2019s troops on Nigerian side of the Lake Chad or in any other part\nof the Nigerian territory. As a responsible organisation, the Nigerian Army\nfinds it necessary to clear the wrong impression or misinformation for history\nand posterity as well as to avoid spreading falsehood and mischievous\npublications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The army said regarding the Chadian onslaught on Boko Haram,\n\u201cThe operation was especially welcomed and supported by the Nigerian Army\nbecause it would deny the insurgent\u2019s rear and logistics bases in Chad from\nwhere they often plan and launched attacks into Nigeria. It is hoped that the\nChadian forces will sustain operations on their side of the border to\npermanently deny Boko Haram criminals of rear bases from where they can launch\noperations into Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement further declared, \u201cFor the avoidance of doubt,\nthe Chadian Operation Bohoma Wrath took place only in Chadian territory and not\non Nigerian territory. The Chadian security and defence forces did not cross\ninto Nigerian territory during the operation and, thus, there are no Chadian\ntroops holding any Nigerian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Nigerian military is fully committed and in total\nsupport of the continued cooperation between Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria\nto finally and speedily decimate Boko Haram\/ISWAP criminals and put final end\nto terrorism in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement said, \u201cMembers of the public are requested to\ndisregard the claim and misleading information that the Chadian security and\ndefence forces are deeply stationed in the islands of Nigeria waiting to\nhandover.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
