For decades, I used my social justice activism as an\nexcuse to neglect my health. That ends now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, I used my social justice activism as an excuse\nto neglect my health. I took on cause after cause. But the whole while, I ate\ncrappy food, rarely exercised, guzzled diet soda and rarely slept. I abused my\nbody through stress and overwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, I am an African American man in my early 50s who\nbattles high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, and hypertension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, despite being a tireless and formidable\nopponent of systemic injustice, I am someone whom COVID-19 could easily kill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data is in: COVID-19 is hitting black America harder.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am not alone. This virus is wiping out black people like\nme in hugely disproportionate numbers. If the African American community is\ngoing to beat this virus \u2014 and create a pandemic-resistant black community \u2014 we\nare going to have to make big changes in both our public systems and our\npersonal lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This virus is especially lethal to African Americans because\nit is \u2014 in effect \u2014 a pandemic jumping on top of multiple, pre-existing epidemics\nthat were already ravaging the black community. Diseases like hypertension,\ndiabetes, asthma, and obesity make the virus far more deadly. And African\nAmerican communities have those illnesses in numbers that are way out of\nproportion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are African Americans so vulnerable? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is that? The reasons for poor health outcomes in the\nblack community are complex. It\u2019s not just workaholic crusaders like me whose\nhealth is sub-optimal. African Americans tend to work in physically challenging\njobs \u2014 ones that demand much, pay less, and offer worse health insurance.\nThat\u2019s a recipe for bad health right there. Also, doctors have been shown to\ngive us shoddier services, even when we have health insurance. Additionally, we\ntend to live in neighborhoods where the stores sell less healthy food; fast\nfood joints and liquor stores provide too many meals in urban America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are other factors as well. Many traditional \u201cblack\nfoods\u201d boast much more cholesterol and sugar than the FDA recommends. And to\nsome African Americans, healthier choices \u2014 like adopting a plant-based diet,\nexploring meditation, practicing yoga, etc. \u2014 may seem culturally alien. While\nnavigating the perilous waters of racial bias, and simultaneously attending to\noften-distressed families and communities, it can be hard to prioritize\nself-care. All of these factors together make African Americans more likely to\nhave diseases that make COVID-19 deadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need complex solutions \u2014 not false choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can we fix the situation? Two familiar lines of thinking\nhave emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government needs to take more responsibility for ending\nthe structural, systemic racism on full display right now in our health care\nand economic systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black people need to take more responsibility for our individual\nhealth choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All too often, these two options are presented as opposing\nsolutions \u2014 or even warring points of view. And anyone who stresses #2 might be\naccused of blaming the victim and ignoring systemic racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this is false debate. We are not faced with an either\/or\nchoice. One can insist upon structural reforms, while also embracing positive\npersonal lifestyle changes. I certainly intend to do both, going forward. After\nall, any meaningful improvement in black wellness will require major change \u2014\nfrom both institutions AND individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no question \u2014 the system must change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an activist like myself, the need to change the system\nis obvious. Ensuring the health of African Americans means addressing the lack\nof access (food deserts), racial discrimination in healthcare and the epidemic\nof over-incarceration. It means confronting the legacy of structural\ninequalities that were devastating black communities long before anyone had\never heard of the coronavirus. African Americans and our allies should\nintensify the fight for these reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we need to change, too. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said: We must also take more responsibility for our own\nhealth. And boosting our immune health must be job number one. The science\nmakes clear that our lifestyle choices \u2014 around sleep, nutrition, stress, and\nmore \u2014 directly affect our ability to strengthen our immune system. And at a\ntime when the virus is doing disproportionate damage to our communities, we\nneed to ask: what can we do as individuals to get ourselves and our loved ones\nout of harm\u2019s way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, we can all vow to eat healthier. Drink more\nwater. Move our bodies. Process emotional pain through therapy, rather than\ncomfort eating or substance abuse. Commit to a spiritual or religious practice.\nMeditate. Rest. Get more sleep. And let\u2019s not forget to practice gratitude. In\nthe midst of this plague, every unlabored, unaided breath is more precious than\never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black influencers set the agenda for global culture. We can\nmake the quest for personal health as cool as we have made the quest for\npersonal wealth. Imagine if rap videos and black T.V. shows started showcasing\npush-ups, Peloton and healthy green drinks, in the same way that they often\nshowcase fashion and foreign cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the good news: There is already a vibrant health and\nwellness movement in the black community. (Did you know African Americans are\nthe fastest growing demographic of veganism?) Those of us looking to make even\nthe smallest improvements may find that the guidance and support we need is\nalready out there, from authentic voices that speak to our experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From longtime practitioners and teachers to newer voices and\nadvocates, here are just a few members of the black wellness community worth\nchecking out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jay-Z and Beyonc\u00e9: The increasingly plant-based power\ncouple wrote the foreword to The Greenprint: Plant-Based Diet, Best Body,\nBetter World by trainer and nutritionist Marco Borges. Jay-Z has also invested\nin black-owned companies that promote healthy lifestyles.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs: The rap mogul has joined forces with\nArianna Huffington to promote sleep meditation through Audible.com. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common: The recording artist, actor, and activist is a\nlongtime pescatarian and former vegan founded his own nonprofit in 2004, Common\nGround Foundation, which brings nutritional programs and chef workshops to\ninner city youth.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queen Afua: Longtime holistic health practitioner, author\nand wellness coach specializing in health accessibility for minority women and\nhelping people build an empowering lifestyle through food, self-care, and\nhealthy choices.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Joseph Michael Levry: A scholar, composer, author,\nand speaker, Dr. Levry brings together healing traditions of east and west.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food Heaven Made Easy: Wendy Lopez and Jessica Jones are\nthe minds behind this food blog, podcast, online store, and YouTube channel.\nThey share recipes, cooking videos and nutrition tips teaching that making\nhealthy recipes from scratch is possible. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jessamyn Stanley: A yoga teacher, body positivity advocate,\nand author of Every Body Yoga. Through her yoga classes, blog, and book,\nStanley demonstrates that yoga is for people of all shapes, sizes, and\nbackgrounds.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

angel Kyodo williams: An ordained Zen priest, the founder\nof the Center for Transformative Change, and the author of Being Black: Zen and\nthe Art of Living With Fearlessness and Grace and Radical Dharma. Through her\nleadership and writing, she is a leading voice in American Zen Buddhism.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healhaus: A black-owned wellness center in Brooklyn that\nspecializes in meditation and yoga classes. They are live-streaming classes for\nfree in the wake of coronavirus.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toni Mitchell: A vegan fitness expert who posts recipes\nand workouts on her YouTube channel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Mental Health: A powerful mental health resource\nfor the black community.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is my challenge, to myself and others: to educate\nourselves about this movement. We can each find one small way to take action\ntoday to better protect our own health \u2014 even as we advocate for others\u2019s\nhealth, too. We amplify the voices and lessons we discover \u2014 in conversations\nwith loved ones, on social media, on any platforms we have to get the word out.\nLet\u2019s make thriving trendy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I commit to improving the system \u2014 and my own health,\ntoo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The necessary structural reforms will take time to enact.\nBut the lifestyle choices we make \u2014 about what we eat and drink, how we live,\nhow we treat our bodies and manage our stress \u2014 can go into effect immediately.\nBig, racially biased systems do limit our options. And yet even within those\nlimitations, we have choices to make. I can\u2019t control the words that come out\nof any politician\u2019s mouth. But I can control the food I put into my own mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this pandemic, the work of creating a healthier, more\npandemic-resistant black community must begin in earnest. In times of crisis,\nwhen our very lives are at stake, we have to put it all on the table. We need\nto use every tool and weapon at our disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for me, I am going to do a better job of protecting my\nown health and wellness. I will do so, not instead of fighting for social\njustice but so I can keep breathing and thriving long enough to win the battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
