Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State yesterday during the May Day\nanniversary to appreciate frontline health and emergency workers, whom he\ndescribed as heroes, for sacrificing their personal well-being for the efforts\nat combating the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In appreciation of the sacrifices made by health workers in the state who\nhe described as frontline officers against the pandemic, said \u201cwe approved a\n400 per cent increment in the Hazard Allowance of Health Officers in the state\nfor the month of April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have also introduced a COVID-19 Allowance for all our frontline\nworkers, which is a very generous amount that takes cognisance of the heightened\nrisks of the jobs they have to do. All these are intended to appreciate the\ndedication of all our Health Officers in the fight against COVID-19,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the state government had procured additional life\nand health insurance for all frontline health workers to cater for the hazard\nthey face in the ongoing battle against Coronavirus, bringing it to two-level\nprotection. This is in addition to the approval of increment in the hazard\nallowance of frontline emergency workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said: \u201cI should also mention that we have put in place additional health\nand life insurance for all our frontline health workers in the state to ensure\nthat they are adequately insured. This gives them insurance protection on two\nlevels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is only fitting that I dedicate this year\u2019s commemoration of the\nWorkers\u2019 Day to celebrating the true heroes of this season, which are the\nhealth workers on the frontline of the battle against Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since this virus started to ravage our communities and disrupt our lives,\nthese heroes have not just been going to work daily, they have been going to\nwar daily against this unseen enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWorkers across public and private sectors, who are represented by various\nLabour Unions, are the engine-rooms of our economy, and the nucleus of wealth\ngeneration. My administration will always seek harmonious relationship with\nworkers for the progress and prosperity of our State. The prompt approval and\npayment of the new minimum wage is a proof that we care about the welfare of our\nworkforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With effect from last January, Gov. Sanwo-Olu said his Government had\nincreased the employers\u2019 contribution to employees\u2019 Retirement Savings Account\n(RSA) from 7.5 per cent to 10 per cent. This, he said, complemented employees\u2019\ncontribution of 8 per cent, bringing it to a total of monthly contribution of\n18 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Governor said the commemoration of Workers\u2019 Day should be a reminder to\nstakeholders that the concept of development must be far-reaching and inclusive\nfor it to benefit the society in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Describing labour force as \u201ca critical stakeholder\u201d in good governance and\n\u201cengine-room\u201d of the economic growth, Sanwo-Olu said his administration, since\ninception, had prioritised payment of new minimum wage to workers as a\ndemonstration of his Government\u2019s commitment to improving their welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also said his administration had continued to assist families of workers\nwho die in the line of duty, adding that the State had not relented, despite\nCOVID-19 pandemic, in paying 418 pensioners for their pension bond arrears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanwo-Olu said his administration had also approved the monthly release of\na pension bail-out fund to the tune of N1.083 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the State Government had procured additional life\nand health insurance for all frontline health workers to cater for the hazard\nthey face in the ongoing battle against coronavirus, bringing it to two-level\nprotection. This is in addition to the approval of increment in the hazard allowance\nof frontline emergency workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sanwo-Olu said there was nothing that better amplified his Government\u2019s\ndevotion to the growth of the workforce than the launch of a knowledge-sharing\nplatform tagged: \u201cA Disruptive S.H.i.F.T\u201d, which rewarded an outstanding public\nservant, Seun Ogunmola, with accelerated promotion from Grade Level 08 to 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the initiative reflected his administration\u2019s resolve to harness\nthe creativity and innovativeness of public servants to positively change the\nface of the State\u2019s Public Service, with a view to achieving the vision of\nmaking Lagos a 21st century economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) chairman in Lagos, Comrade Agnes Sessi,\nsaid despite the ravaging pandemic, the contribution of workers to the development\nof the State could not be undermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She prayed for all emergency and health workers on the frontline, stressing\nthat the ravaging virus had affected many workers in all spheres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She praised the Governor for the increment of hazards allowance from 5,000\nto 25,000 for health workers, saying the gesture would truly serve as\nmotivation for the frontline workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
