A Lagos-based man, Sulaiman Maiyegun, aka Afobaje, who\nallegedly battered his wife and bragged about it on Facebook was on Friday\narraigned before the Igbosere Magistrates\u2019 Court on a two-count charge of\nassault occasioning harm and offensive publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her ruling, Magistrate Folake Oshin granted the defendant\nbail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties who must be a cleric and a\nfamily member to the defendant. Maiyegun had on May 5 posted to his Facebook\naccount, \u201cI beat my wife and I am waiting for her police because I talked to a\nwoman.\u201d The post was attached with several pictures of the battered woman,\nidentified as Mariam Gabriel, with blood oozing from her forehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maiyegun\u2019s action attracted condemnation from many Nigerians\non social media. One of his friends, Dabio Michael, wrote, \u201cHow I wish you knew\nthe way she loves you. You wouldn\u2019t have beaten her this way. Sule, come back\nto your senses. What you did was bad and as a friend, I will tell you the\ntruth. Go and apologise to her and delete this rubbish (post) from social\nmedia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another friend, Ahmed Abdulahi, wrote, \u201cThis is too bad,\nSule.\u201d Also, Bukola Ayinde wrote, \u201cWhy did you do this, Sule? This is unfair.\nYou shouldn\u2019t have done this to your wife. Delete these pictures from social\nmedia and beg her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also, Michael Williams wrote, \u201cYou are my friend but it\u2019s\nobvious you can\u2019t change.\u201d The viral offensive post gained traction online and\ngot the attention of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response\nTeam, who reached out to the Commander, Area J Police Command, ACP Gbolahan\nOdugbemi, and got the suspect arrested on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At his arraignment before the Igbosere Magistrates\u2019 Court on\nFriday, Maiyegun pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of assault\noccasioning harm and offensive publication. According to the News Agency of\nNigeria, the prosecutor, SP Shinaolu Adeoye, told the court that the defendant\ncommitted the offences on May 5 at 12:13pm at Maiyegun town, Jakande Estate,\nEti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prosecutor said the defendant unlawfully assaulted his\nwife, the complainant, by beating her with his fist on her forehead. \u201cThe\ndefendant injured the victim on her forehead and posted an inciting and\nprovoking publication about the incident on his Facebook page,\u201d Adeoye said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 57 and\n173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. NAN reports that Section 57\nprovides as punishment six months jail term or a fine of N90,000 while Section\n173 provides three years\u2019 imprisonment on conviction. Adeoye, however, urged\nthe court to remand the defendant to the correctional centre and asked for an\nadjournment date for the commencement of the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a swift reaction, the defendant\u2019s counsel, Mr Mustapha\nDanesi, urged the court to grant his client bail on the most liberal terms,\nadding that the matter was as a result of a family crisis. Oshin in her ruling\nalso directed the court registrar to verify the addresses of Maiyegun\u2019s\nsureties who must be taxpayers in the state. The case was adjourned until June\n22 for mention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
