Though phone interviews have always been part of the\nrecruiting and hiring process, in the past two months, they\u2019ve gone from\nuncommon to the norm. Whether you\u2019re dialing-in for audio-only or hopping on a\nvideo, your ability to master a digital conversation can make or break the\nopportunity. Particularly in a time when the competition is higher than ever,\nshowing off your A-game will make you a more attractive candidate to employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest hurdle of trying to snag a job outside of an\noffice is allowing your expertise and personality to shine through. Here,\ncareer coaches and experts provide their best advice for nailing the new normal\nof virtual interviews:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t just be on time, be early<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you\u2019re the unofficial tech support of your\nhousehold, hiccups happen to everyone. It might not matter for a family movie\nnight, but if it causes you to be five minutes late to an interview, it could\ncost you the gig. That\u2019s why chief brand and engagement officer at EHE Health\nJoy Altimare suggests logging on five to ten minutes early to test the\nequipment. Dependent on the company, you may have to download new software to\njoin in. It\u2019s better to be sitting on the line, waiting for the interviewer rather\nthan the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep your eye on the computer\u2019s camera lens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about the last time you FaceTimed with your friends or\nyour family. Did you find it tricky to know where to look? If so, you\u2019re not\nthe only one. In fact, Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D., an industrial-organizational\npsychology practitioner, and workplace expert, says most people tend to fidget,\nlook down or look away when someone is not directly in front of us. That\u2019s why\nit\u2019s best to strive to keep your eye directly in the camera, so the person on\nthe other endnotes your level of attention and participation. \u201cYou may want to\npractice with a friend or loved one before the interview to see how you come\nacross on video. Then, you will know how to shift your body\u2019s positioning and\ngaze to make the best impression,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean up your space<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During these unsettling times, your mind may feel scattered.\nYour attention span may be short, to say the very least. And your motivation to\ntidy up the kitchen? Or the living room? Meh, not so much. But when you\u2019re\nprepping for an interview via video, Kristin Lockhart, the vice president of\nrecruiting services at Adams Keegan, says it\u2019s important to tidy up your area.\nAnd not only in terms of what\u2019s visible to the interviewer, but also the table or\ndesk in front of you, as well as the sounds in your home. \u201cYou should plan to\nbe in a place that is quiet, with no background noise or other distractions,\nlike children, dogs, birds, and so on,\u201d she continues. \u201cIf you are using your\nmobile phone, turn off your messaging and other alerts on your phone, because\nthat can easily disrupt your thoughts. A speakerphone is ideal as it frees your\nhands for taking notes, and it stays stationary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dress for the part you wish to play<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know how the saying goes, so, um, you should probably\nput on pants already. Though many people are enjoying the freedom to dress\ncomfortably while quarantined at home, an interview is a reason enough to\nfreshen up your wardrobe. \u201cWear clothing appropriate to the industry and err on\nthe side of being overdressed instead of underdressed,\u201d Hakim suggests. \u201cYou\nshould do this even if the recruiter says that you need not get dressed up.\nThink \u2018smart casual\u2019 as a guiding look.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do your homework<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with any interview, Dr. Roshawnna Novellus, the CEO of\nEnrichHER, says it\u2019s essential to do your homework and research what makes the\ncompany you\u2019re interviewing with unique. You should research everything from\nculture and mission to core values, and then brainstorm examples that prove\nyour fit. Then, make sure you can weave those instances into the conversation.\n\u201cIf you are on the phone, mention that you\u2019ve read their latest blog article or\nthe press release about their recent team volunteering effort, and be sure to\nnote a specific fact you discovered about it. This will show effort and\nattention to detail,\u201d she recommends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen and take notes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though this may seem like a no-brainer, many people are so\nnervous during an interview; they have trouble listening to what the\ninterviewer is saying. Instead, they listen to their anxious thoughts and then\nlose track of the course of the discussion. A way to prevent this from\nhappening, according to Lockhart, is by taking notes. Particularly during a\nphone interview, when you aren\u2019t forced to pay attention in the same way,\nscribbling down key points will keep you on track. \u201cIt is difficult to read the\ninterviewer with no facial expressions, so you must listen carefully and\nclarify the questions before you respond,\u201d she shares. \u201cYou can also refer back\nto thoughts or questions you may have without disrupting the interview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you know that smiling can lift your own spirits? And\nwhen you grin, your voice changes, and your demeanor is calmer. When you\u2019re on\na video call, career expert for TopInterview, Amanda Augustine says flashing\nthose pearly whites will cause others to perceive you as more friendly,\nenergetic, and positive. And believe it or not, the same is true when you\naren\u2019t face-to-face. \u201cWhile the interviewer can\u2019t see you are smiling through\nthe phone, research proves that they can detect when you\u2019re smiling based only\non the changes in your tone of voice,\u201d she notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can you get ready? Augustine suggests a pre-interview\nritual that lifts your energy levels. \u201cWhether that involves push-ups,\nmeditation, or a jam session on your guitar, find something to boost your\nendorphins,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pause before you respond<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, Lockhard says phone interviews become awkward\nwhen people are speaking over one another. To avoid this, always put the\ninterviewer first and allow them to direct the conversation. An easy way to\nensure you\u2019re doing this, according to Lockhart, is to stop and breathe before\nyou begin your response in case there are additional points to the question.\n\u201cSpeak clearly and carefully and confirm that you have answered the question.\nKeep your answers short, or you can lose your audience if you speak for too\nlong,\u201d she urges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pay attention to the interviewer\u2019s surroundings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with any interview, following-up is a smart practice. You\nwant to not only illustrate your appreciation for the opportunity but reiterate\nyour excitement for possible next steps. Dr. Novellus says video interviews\nactually offer an advantage to make your \u2018thank you\u2019 note more impactful and\npersonal. If you can, she recommends finding something about your interviewers\u2019\nsurroundings that you like. For example, you might mention that their garden\nseems like a lovely place to recharge during a lunch break if you can see it\nfrom your interviewer\u2019s window. \u201cThis will let them know you were really paying\nattention,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
