In the meantime, brain drain keeps affecting the health sector as Nigerian physicians migrate overseas for all sorts of reasons. Worse still is that some of the doctors who remain in Nigeria have been abandoning the profession for other ventures. TESSY IGOMU leads our series of reports<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I quit medicine for tech innovation \u2014Nkem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Ifiok Nkem is the founder of Snapilabs, a technology innovation company that empowers people to achieve more in their life, businesses and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From saving lives as a physician, he delved into the unknown, suave world of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this tech guru, if Nigeria had provided the enabling environment, people like him that are passionate about the medical profession would have given their best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he believes it has been a win-win situation, as he still sees himself as doing what is synonymous to his first love \u2014 medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was just a shift from saving lives to empowering lives. And this was the easiest and better solution for me,\u201d Nkem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, the tech guru recalled that his dream while growing up was to become a medical doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to save lives. The dream was like a burning desire in me,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focused and tenacious, he gained admission into the University of Port Harcourt to study medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, mid into his clinical years, Nkem\u2019s mindset about being a doctor changed and he decided to quit as soon as he graduated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said getting to realise that certain man-made factors were responsible for the suffering of quite a large number of Nigerians was the game changer for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring my clinical years, I discovered that the number one risk factor for most of the chronic illnesses in Nigeria is low socio-economic status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI realised that most of the delays in healthcare delivery and high mortality rate are caused by low socio-economic status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople encounter delays in getting to the hospital, even when they eventually do, there\u2019s delay in getting treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the end of the day, when treatment commences, there\u2019s inability to follow up. \u201cThese, for me, were avoidable circumstances,\u201d Nkem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing, he said, \u201cThe second factor is illiteracy, which is also linked to low socio-economic status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis particularly led to a massive brain shift for me when I was in 400 Level, and it continued till I was out of the medical profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe shift was from saving lives to empowering lives to impacting on the society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is why now, I and my company create training and software products that empower businesses and these businesses in turn empower other people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nkem was recently made a member of the Forbes Business Council, a recognition that came based on the impact his company made on budding youths and other entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former physician said he won\u2019t admit to being better off by not remaining in the medical profession, but that he found fulfilment in his new venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Akwa Ibom indigene told our correspondent that due to the love he had for the medical profession, he wouldn\u2019t have quitted due to poor remuneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact is that if Nigeria had provided me with the enabling environment to practise, I would have remained a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe parameter for measurement is not really the same. It was not the poor welfare package or remuneration that made me leave medicine for tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it was just because of money, I would have taken the easy way out by leaving the country, like my other colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy focus was more on empowering lives, while what medicine gave me the ability to do was to save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe I have touched more lives now than I could have saved as a medical doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPoverty among the people was a contributory factor to what informed my decision to quit medicine. That was how my vision was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is causing the chronic illnesses in Nigeria is poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought to myself, as a medical doctor, if I keep saving lives, the vicious cycle of poverty will keep reoccurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, why not focus on empowering lives. That was why I experienced the mind shift and took the decision to quit medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the National Bureau of Statistics in a recently released \u201c2019 Poverty and Inequality in Nigeria\u201d report, 40 per cent of the total population, or almost 83 million people, live below the country\u2019s poverty line of N137,430 ($381.75) per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nkem told PUNCH Healthwise that not feeling fulfilled then also had to do with the country\u2019s failed healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can only get to understand what I experienced when you visit public health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt came from me seeing sick people that are unable to afford treatment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot feeling fulfilled also arose from seeing people dying from simple illnesses that you know they should, ordinarily, survive,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On finding fulfilment, Nkem confessed that he found so much joy in his new endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He revealed that over 40,000 entrepreneurs have been empowered through his software products, training and booth camps, adding, \u201cThe happiness I feel can\u2019t be quantified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLives are being empowered and changed daily. What I am doing right now is similar to medicine; saving lives to empowering lives through technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSnapilabs is into building and selling software and other products that allow businesses to leverage the power of the internet to increase their profitability, get more traffic, customers and to make more sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the moment, we have over 12 software products and over 40,000 pages users in more than 40,000 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe just launched a new product -Video Toss-360, which leverages the technology of virtual reality and live video calls to help businesses deliver interactive experiences to customers in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDue to the COVID-19 pandemic, many customers are not comfortable leaving their homes to transact business, \u201cthe software turns business into a virtual reality, so that customers can see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said it is sad that doctors, especially the very good and specialist ones, are leaving the country in droves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In proffering solutions to the problem, he said the first step towards addressing brain drain among medical practitioners is to improve on the welfare package of doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat seems to look like the simplest and easiest solution is to improve the remuneration for doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter that, the healthcare system needs a complete overhaul. More funding should be channelled to the health sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is worthy to note that it is not just the salary or the take home that is making people to leave, other contributory factors that include insecurity, lack of basic amenities and lack of support for human rights have eroded the trust physicians have in the system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the issue of low ratio of doctors to patients in Nigeria, he said the private sector and government should build more hospitals and employ more doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former physician lamented that, despite the negative impact of brain drain on the health sector, many doctors still find it difficult to get a job in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have many colleagues that don\u2019t have jobs. I have consultants that were not retained after their training and are finding it difficult to secure a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are lots of young doctors that have graduated, but are finding it difficult to secure residency training space in the country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another solution highlighted by Nkem is that medical schools should be well funded and expanded, while more teaching hospitals should be established to boost the capacity of physicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked if, based on his love for medicine, he would encourage any of his children to study medicine, Nkem took a long breath and said, \u201cI would say yes and no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I will do is to guide them to make informed decisions. I will present the facts and let them know the merit and the demerit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf they are passionate about saving lives and believe in the Nigerian project, why not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe by the time they are ready for tertiary education, things would have changed; if not, I will definitely ensure they don\u2019t practise in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, our educational system is decayed, but I believe in the future of this country and I know that in the next 10 to 15 years, things will change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nkem believes that probably his story would have been different if he was outside the country, and that he might have focused on saving lives as a general practitioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He encouraged the young ones passionate about the medical profession not to give up on their dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing gives hope and joy than being able to save lives. Either saving lives as a doctor or empowering lives like I am doing now, nothing compares to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe profession is still very noble if you have the passion. But if your dream is to become a millionaire, then you should probably forget medicine and go into something else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nkem advised the youth to acquire skills that will better position them financially should their certificate not guarantee the type of comfort they desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said, \u201cWhatever you are studying, whether medicine, engineering, chemistry or theatre arts, just know that the world is moving away from certificates towards skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery young Nigerian should acquire sellable skills that can be converted into money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Originally published at Punch <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Tessy Igomu Whereas the World Health Organisation recommends doctor to patient ratio of 1:1,000, in Nigeria, it is four doctors per 10,000 patients.
