You\u2019re from Nasarawa State, what tribe are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: I am Afo from Nasarawa Local Government Area, Nasarawa. I studied\nHistory at Nasarawa State University, where I earned BA degree. My elder\nbrother earlier married from the Yoruba community. I am the second person\nwithin our family to marry outside my tribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How old are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: I\u2019m 28 years old. I did not plan to get married during my service\nyear. It was God\u2019s plan for us to get married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are from Niger State, what tribe are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: I am Nupe; a proud one for that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How did you meet Hauwa?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: We met at NYSC kitchen when we were in camp. We just clicked when\nwe first met; it was love at first sight! We were both struggling to be served\nlunch. But the moment I saw her, I fell in love with her. However, I did not\nrealise that it would culminate into marriage so soon. It\u2019s God\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What really attracted you to her?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: Her simplicity and beauty were the things that attracted me to\nher. Also, when we started the relationship, I discovered how kind and caring\nshe is, and those are the attributes I have always wanted in any woman that\nwill be my life partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What qualities of his attracted you to Muhammad?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: He is religious, intelligent, simple, generous, wonderful and\ncaring. He is simply the best (man) I have ever come across. I like him because\nhe is amiable, caring and friendly. These attributes of his attracted me to\nhim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How did Muhammad Musa show interest in you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: It was an amazing moment. When we first met, we clicked on the spot.\nIt was love at first sight. I did not accept (to date him) that same week; it\nwas two weeks later that I accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So you initially play hard to get\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: Yes, of course. I did because as a woman, it is our pride to prove\ndifficult before eventually succumbing (to propositions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n What made you to accept his proposal?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: He is just too natural and real, that was why I accepted his\nproposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You met in camp and already getting married, why did you not wait till\nafter service year?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: Time, they say, is of essence, and marriage is an institution\nordained by God, who is the owner of our lives. I rely on this to hasten the\nmarriage, instead of waiting for the end of our service year. I felt if I\nwaited much longer than now, I might change my mind and start a fresh\nrelationship with someone else who may not be right for me. So, I hastened the\nmarriage because I felt it was an opportunity I could not afford to miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How long was your courtship?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: Our courtship lasted for 10 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some people believe courtship should last longer than that, how would you\nreact to that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: It\u2019s not how long the courtship lasts that matters but how well it\nis. What is more important is to understand each other\u2019s behaviour, rather than\na long-term courtship to understand each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why are you so sure she is the right one for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: During our three-week orientation, I discovered she has good\ncharacter, which she demonstrated during our courtship. I also investigated and\ndiscovered that she inherited her good character from her family; she has a\ngood family background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are the other things you love about her?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: I do not only love her, my passion for her developed further when\nI discovered she was religious, intelligent, simple, kind, hospitable, loving\nand caring. I was convinced that when we start having children, she will\ninculcate such attributes in our children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you told your parents that you planned to get married to a lady you\nmet in camp, what were their reactions?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: My parents\u2019 reactions were not only positive; they were also\nsupportive of the idea. They both agreed that as long as we love each other and\nagree to live together in peace and tolerate each other for the rest of our\nlives, they were in support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How did you tell your parents you found the man you would marry in camp and\nwould want to get married now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: It was an uphill task to speak out to my parents but I later\nsummoned courage to inform them. I told them point blank that my feelings\ntowards him were becoming too natural and real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And how did they react?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: My mum was so happy about it but my dad objected to it at first for\nreasons best known to him. Thank God, he later accepted so as not to hurt my\nfeelings because he believes that my happiness should come first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How do you plan to handle the financial responsibilities that come with\nmarriage?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: I\u2019m an artisan, with specialty in tiling floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are your plans to handle your financial responsibilities?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: I am serving my nation for now as a youth corps member. At the end\nof my service year, I will grab any opportunity that comes my way, so as to\nreduce the burden on the shoulders of my husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some people believe it is better for a couple to start working before\ngetting married but both of you are still corps members\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: We will continue to do our best and allow Almighty God to provide\nour daily bread and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What made you trust him?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: If you meet your Mr Right, you don\u2019t need to be told. Aside from\nthat, his simplicity and calmness made me to truly love him. He is simply the\nbest for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some people believe that courtship should be longer, how would you react to\nthat?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: It\u2019s not how far but how well. All you need in courtship is not\nabout the duration but how well you understand each other. We were friends for\nfew days and when we became lovers, it became so overwhelming and amazing.\nEverything became so interesting as my world reached its destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Did you receive any support for the wedding?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: Yes, especially from my family and friends. They rallied round to\nensure the success of the wedding. The NYSC band graced the unique occasion,\nduring which they played concordant tunes to add colour to the historic\nwedding. NYSC members and our parents also attended the occasion to demonstrate\ntheir support for the marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Did NYSC sponsor the wedding?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: NYSC did. The Kano State NYSC Coordinator, Ladan Baba, also\nattended the wedding, alongside our parents and family friends. They all\ncontributed to the success of the wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You said you\u2019re the second person in your family to marry from another\ntribe, did you nurse any fear before the marriage?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: I never did because we met while we were in camp and both\nrealised on the spot that we were meant for each other. Based on this reality,\nI had no fear whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Were you initially apprehensive about marrying someone from another tribe\nand state?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hauwa: Not at all, I always stand for the unity of our country, Nigeria,\nbefore my friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do you think your action will inspire a lot of people and probably\nencourage unity in the country?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhammad: My action will inspire more Nigerians to marry outside their\nstates and tribes.
