{"id":4983,"date":"2021-06-30T04:51:51","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T03:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/towncryyers.com\/?p=4983"},"modified":"2021-06-30T04:51:55","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T03:51:55","slug":"why-teaching-is-about-listening-not-talking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/towncryyers.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/30\/why-teaching-is-about-listening-not-talking\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Teaching Is About Listening, Not Talking"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When in doubt: Ask, don&#8217;t tell.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Angela Duckworth, CEO and Co-Founder of Character Lab, UPenn Professor of Psychology at Character Lab<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the problem: You can\u2019t listen and talk at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is my problem: I talk too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, each week when I prepare to teach my undergraduate class, my slides and the notes that go with them grow longer and longer as I think of more and more ideas it feels urgent to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time I meet with my students, I\u2019m a fire hydrant of facts. Nervously, I glance at the ticking clock, talking faster and faster in an attempt not to leave anything out. At the end of class, if I\u2019ve delivered everything planned, it feels like a small victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even so, in that scenario, it\u2019s not the students who triumph. Because talking too much means I\u2019m not listening to what they have to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My goal this year is to ask my students what education researchers call \u201cauthentic questions.\u201d That is to say, I want to pose questions for which there is no single simple answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, rather than launching directly into a soliloquy at the start of my next lecture, I will instead ask students to ponder this authentic question: \u201cHow do you cope with failure?\u201d Of course, I\u2019ll also prepare slides that address that question, review recent research on the topic, and in other ways be the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skipping authentic questions may feel more efficient, and perhaps this is why, in a typical classroom, most of the questions teachers ask are not authentic ones. But the truism holds: you haven\u2019t taught until they\u2019ve learned. What matters isn\u2019t the volume of information I dispense but rather the quality of the insights in the hungry, active, and independent minds of my students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t talk too much. The young people in your life are spending hours and hours on Zoom calls where, by logistical necessity, they\u2019re on mute. The more we can let them unmute themselves, express themselves, and actively engage rather than passively receive, the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do ask authentic questions. Begin with \u201cWhy do you think that\u2026\u201d or \u201cHow do you feel about\u2026\u201d and then listen.
