Almost half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re a woman and haven\u2019t gone through menopause yet, then it\u2019s possible for you to get pregnant,\u201d says Siobhan Dolan, MD, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and women\u2019s health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can take steps to improve your chances of conceiving only when you\u2019d like to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why It Happens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the saying goes, the only form of birth control that\u2019s 100% effective is abstinence. \u201cMost of the time, birth controldoes work, but \u2018accidents\u2019 can happen,\u201d Dolan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Condoms, birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and other methods usually work 80% to more than 90% of the time. And permanent birth control, like female sterilization or male vasectomy, has a failure rate of less than 1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use birth control wrong, your chances of getting pregnant go up. Sometimes it\u2019s obvious that it didn\u2019t work, like when a condom breaks. In that case, you may want to take a second step, like the over-the-counter \u201cmorning after\u201d pill. It can prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected sex. But if you don\u2019t notice an error like a small hole in a condom, or that you missed your daily pill, you could become pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The single biggest reason for unplanned pregnancy isn\u2019t ineffective birth control &#8212; it\u2019s from a couple not using anycontraception. \u201cSome women may not use birth control regularly, and others not at all,\u201d says Maureen Phipps, MD, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. \u201cThey may not like it, might not have access to it, or may even have a partner who doesn&#8217;t want them to use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many times, women or their partners aren\u2019t sure if they want a child or not, Phipps says. \u201cThey\u2019re not planning [to have a baby], but they\u2019re not actively trying to avoid pregnancy, either. And they end up getting pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some women don\u2019t realize that they could get pregnant. If you\u2019ve struggled with infertility in the past, don\u2019t have regular periods, or are in perimenopause (the time period before menopause, which can lead to light or irregular periods), it\u2019s still possible for you to conceive, though you don\u2019t expect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you still get your periods &#8212; even if they aren\u2019t regular &#8212; and you don\u2019t want to get pregnant, you \u201cshould keep using birth control,\u201d Dolan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you go through menopause (meaning you&#8217;re no longer menstruating and it\u2019s been a full year since you\u2019ve had a period), then it\u2019s safe to assume you can have sex without contraception and not get pregnant.
