Watching videos of centurions, you start to see a theme \u2013 they all seem\ncontent.  That might be shocking to\nyounger people, especially anyone who fears old age. Perhaps we fear missing\nout on opportunities in life, and worry that we\u2019ll find ourselves too old to do\nthings we enjoy or maybe we\u2019re just so stuck in the moment that we fail to see the\nlight at the end of the tunnel. We set out to discover the secrets to life and\ninterviewing people 100 years of age and older. What they share may surprise\nyou!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Mercola (of the Mercola Video Library) interviewed three centurions for\nthis very information, and many other people have as well. Quite a few of us\n(more now than ever) have relatives or know someone who is 100 or over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One lady I know is 104 is full of sassy attitude and enjoys talking to\npeople and sharing her wealth of wisdom. From my conversations with her and the\ninterviews, here\u2019s what we discovered about the secrets to living a happy and\nfulfilling life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Happiness comes from what we do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 100 years old, or older, people don\u2019t seem to sit around and smile about\nthe things they accumulated in life. \nRather, it\u2019s more about their life experiences. Happy memories can go a\nlong ways toward happiness later on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One man over 100 years old said he did all he wanted to do. Now he wants to\nbe helpful and keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have so many beautiful memories,\u201d said a woman over 100. \u201cI got to do\nall the things I wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That tells us to jump in and live life \u2013 remember that it\u2019s about really\nliving and making memories with people we love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Science backs this up as well. We know people derive more happiness that is\nlong-term from experiences such as vacations rather than from possessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Happiness comes from a positive attitude and optimism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

People over 100 seem to remember life through rose tinted glasses, making\nit sound like an adventure even through hard times, like war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been lucky,\u201d says one centurion despite living through 2 great\nwars!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also talked about how \u201ceverything makes me happy. I love talking to\npeople\u2026 going shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common advice from people who are doing well at 100 is to \u201cDecide to be\ncontent.\u201d Others say, \u201cDon\u2019t chase happiness. Just be satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deciding life is good changes our perception and makes life better, and\napparently it helps you live much longer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Happiness comes from living in the NOW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Age is only a number. You live for the day and keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is wisdom from someone with a very long past-but they enjoy the\npresent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The past is the past; we can\u2019t change it. But we can rob ourselves of our\npresent happiness and good emotional health by hanging onto old regrets,\ngrudges, and pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Centurions often talk about their \u201cgood\u201d marriage, all their happy\nmemories, and all their good times together. It\u2019s another area where they might\nbe applying rose-tinted glasses, but it\u2019s apparent that they got emotional\nsupport and felt like they have a life partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also say that people today give up too easily these days-so there was\nhard work involved, but at the end of their life that part isn\u2019t really\nimportant anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing happily married and happy in general is the remedy for all illness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don\u2019t have studies on how marriage or long-term relationships affect\nlife span, but you don\u2019t have to be a scientist to take note: centurions all\nspeak about their decades long marriage with a smile on their face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even people who have been widowed for a few decades say they have many,\nmany warm memories about their married life, and that still makes them happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Eat natural, real food to feel good and live long<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people who are 100 say they feel strong and like they\u2019re 69 or 79.\nThese are the people who stay active physically and mentally, and have a lot to\nshare with other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people over 100 talk about eating fresh food that they grew\nthemselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And older people will tell you over and over: eat in moderation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Learn to adapt for a better and longer life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLife goes on regardless\u201d is a common theme. People who live well into old\nage understand that there is hardship in life but they know life goes on and\nthey must too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you live 7, 8, 9, 10 or more decades, you\u2019re going to see a lot of\nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People who adapt and change with the times do better. It\u2019s part of having a\npositive attitude-they\u2019re excited for new opportunities instead of fearing\nchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Help others<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helping others is one way to build relationships and connections, and it\nmakes you feel great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s another common theme among people who live to be over 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being kind and helping others gives you a sense of purpose too, and it\nfights depression and anxiety. Not only that, it\u2019s a way of staying active and\nproductive after you retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a win-win for everyone involved, and being older and retired can mean\nhaving more time for volunteering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Always keep learning!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Older people will advise to get a good education to help you go far in\nlife, and science has shown that people with a Bachelor\u2019s degree actually do\nlive about a decade longer than people who don\u2019t have one. (From the U.S.\nCenters for Disease an Control Prevention)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Older people will tell you to keep learning all through life, both in and\nout of school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be curious-it makes life more interesting and fun. And it helps you stay\nengaged with life and the changing technology and times. That helps you adapt\ntoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Practice mindfulness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

People over 100 tend to live in the moment as it comes, rather than\nworrying about plans, regrets, and getting caught up in pressure and worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cherish special time with family and friends, the colours and smell of\na new flower in spring, or the feel of the grass on their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When life is enjoyed in the moment, it\u2019s just better\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
