When most people are found guilty or caught red-handed in an act, they usually shift the blame to the accuser of the brethren – the devil. So, after listening to many commentaries about what happened on a night that was supposed to be Will Smith’s crowning glory at the Oscars, I could not but go back to the statements of one of the most gifted and most accomplished men in Hollywood – Denzel Washington. He told Will – “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you,”. For non-religious folks, this statement does not add up, but coming from a man I have the highest respect for, I could not but take a second look at his missive.

If we are to take Denzel Washington seriously, we would assume that Will Smith was not in control of himself during his infamous act of slapping a fellow comedian – Chris Rock. We can also say that just like the devil used Eve to orchestrate the downfall of man in the garden of Eden, the devil that Denzel Washington was alluding to, must have used someone on that faithful day to bring out the worst in Will Smith. The first candidate we could point to is the individual who provoked the Oscar winner – Will Smith. What we must realize is that the subject of a joke often never finds a joke about them as funny. No matter how hilarious a joke is, if the joke is about something you are insecure about, it will be very painful. And possibly leave a scar that would take a long time to heal. So, it is understandable for Will Smith to react in ways that can pacify his wife’s pain from the joke which produced the slap. The next candidate we might say the devil used that night is Will Smith’s wife – Jada Pinkett Smith. It could be said that her reaction to the joke instigated her husband to almost lose the biggest prize of his life as an actor.

If we are to continue on the activities of the devil on Oscar night, I would say the devil can use anyone. We must not be the Judas who takes the responsibility of betraying our Lord. However, we must also take responsibility for our actions. No matter the provocation, the provoked has the final response. Will Smith could even take the joke as a joke since he is a comedian who most likely has used inappropriate jokes in his career. And use the publicity from the joke to help his wife start a body-shaming campaign about her health condition that would bring sponsors on board. The ramification of this joke may run deeper than we could ever find out because this is not the first time Chris Rock is picking on Mrs. Smith on an award night. Notwithstanding, being a reactive person would often put you in trouble. Many inmates serving life sentences were individuals who could not control themselves in moments of provocation. We cannot control other people’s words and actions, but we can control our responses. Will Smith and Chris Rock have both apologized to each other and the matter might be forgotten soon, yet it was a night that could have ended with Will Smith losing the Oscar he deserves. And be charged for assault because the devil used a fellow African American comedian and his wife on a night that was supposed to be a celebration for Will Smith, King Richard, Venus, and Serena Williams.

Ata Ukuta, Editor – Towncryyers

When most people are found guilty or caught red-handed in an act, they usually shift the blame to the accuser of the brethren – the devil.
