<\/figure>\n\n\n\nAt the time Ese was abducted, forcefully converted to Islam and married\noff, a monarch of Sanusi\u2019s stature could easily have ordered the immediate\nreturn of the girl to her parents and prevented such a criminal and ungodly act\nwithin his palace, the headquarters of his domain in which he was the absolute\nauthority, but he did nothing until overwhelming public outcry compelled him to\nmake a reluctant intervention, after which the poor hapless girl was returned\nto her parents. By then, of course, she had already been sexually violated and\nimpregnated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even the Inspector General of Police at the time, Solomon Arase, when\nconfronted with the reluctance of Nigeria Police Force to effect the release of\nEse Oruru from the Emir\u2019s palace at the time, was reported in The Punch to have\nconfessed to being powerless to do so without Sanusi\u2019s intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is this same deposed Emir that some thoughtless people, including those\nconsidered to be highly cerebral, introspective and current, are singing his\npraises. Where did Sanusi hide these \u2018progressive qualities\u2019 when a hapless,\nhelpless, and hopeless girl was thrown virtually at his mercy, before his all\npowerful and royal majesty? If not that he is an Islamic extremist, who sees\nnothing wrong in the forceful conversion and forceful marriage of an underage\ngirl simply because she is \u2018kaferi\u2019, with no rights, shouldn\u2019t his instincts\nhave galvanised him into speedy and urgent intervention on behalf of the poor\ngirl the very moment he heard of her\nplight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even if the above vaunted qualities were in short supply or absolutely\ncomatose in him as of that time, what about the natural sympathetic and\nfatherly instinct that any parent must have, regardless of whether the subject\nmatter is your biological child or not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recently, I saw a video of one of Sanusi\u2019s daughters speaking so eloquently\nand glowingly about her father\u2019s qualities. As a father, how would Sanusi had\nfelt if a Yoruba trader in Kano, for example, had abducted this young lady or\nany of his other daughters at the same age of 13 and whisked her hundreds of\nkilometres from Kano to a place as distant as Okitipupa, forced her to renounce\nIslam and accept Christianity, raped her and forced her into a marriage that\nher parents did not sanction? I shudder to think of what would have been the\nrepercussion of such folly, what bloody carnage would have been unleashed on\nnot only people of Yoruba extraction resident in Kano, but of all other\nsouthern ethnic tribes resident in that city, if not the entire North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just like they whitewashed Buhari, a known religious bigot, autocratic\nruler and ethnic irredentist, who publicly declared that he would do everything\nin his power to see that Sharia is established everywhere across Nigeria, and\npresented him as a born-again democrat, ahead of the 2015 elections, some of\nthese people are now surreptitiously bombarding our sensibilities with Sanusi\u2019s\nso-called high morals, integrity, and reformist credentials. They have started\nsuggesting that he is a possible material for the 2023 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sanusi, unlike Ese, was not completely innocent of his travails. Many have sighted Sanusi\u2019s many sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No, Muhammadu Sanusi II, former Emir of Kano, is not the innocent\npolitically shining star that gullible southerners with slavish mentality would\nlike to sell to the rest of us as a presidential material, ahead of 2023. The\nignoble dethronement and indignities he just experienced was Karma serving him\ndinner \u2013 a la carte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who knows, the dessert may still be coming.
