Nigeria is fast losing everything that connects us as a nation. We are so fragmented along ethnic, political and religious lines that it is almost hopeless to imagine a reversal of the present downward slide. The 1914 amalgamation of Nigeria has brought many Armageddon moments. Today, the Buhari administration has done irreparable damages to the Nigerian psyche. The promised Eldorado tagged “Change” is now a horror/action-packed movie filled with banditry, kidnappings, ethnic and religious killings, unprecedented corruption and callous governance.
From Obasanjo to Buhari, Nigeria has been very unlucky in the quality of leaders that the system has enthroned. Common men like Oshiomhole that rose through the ranks, completely forgot where they came from. Young and new breed politicians like Dimeji Bankole and Yaya Bello darkened any hope of getting our leadership profile right. The younger ones lack any form of progressive ideology or ethical values. They just want to be Special Assistants (SA) to anyone regardless of their reputation or manifesto.
What is the way forward? We are the way forward. We must take individual responsibility for making Nigeria great. It is our individual and collective forthrightness, professionalism, and concern for one another that can make Nigeria good and eventually great. Journalists must keep journals with fearless and truthful entries unlike what journalists in Channels TV are now renowned for. Parents must be authentic and set examples that are worth emulating, unlike the international prostitution their parenting has promoted in states like Edo State. Religious, traditional and political leaders must lead prudently and selflessly unlike what we see in Buhari’s failed and failing government. We are all guilty of the Nigeria we see today. And we must do all to dethrone the evil and unreasonable men and women among us.
