How Does It Feel To Be Buhari’s Lieutenant?

When Festus Keyamo was doing his internship with Chief Abdul-Ganiyu “Gani” Oyesola Fawehinmi, GCON, SAN, he was one of the most promising youngsters in Gani’s Chambers. Almost everyone thought he would follow the footsteps of his mentor. Only a handful of people who understood the inner workings of his mind and ambitions could predict that he would eventually become a mouthpiece for a former dictator whose reign was littered with many cases of human rights violations, suppression of the press, and the administration of draconian decrees. Nigerians began to have an inkling into who Festus Keyamo is when he stepped into the motion picture between the stripper Stephanie and Apostle Suleiman that was allegedly stage-managed by Nasir El Rufai. Keyamo delivered the goods and services, and not long after he was crowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Gani and Keyamo

We have seen how supporters of Donald Trump turn a blind eye and deaf ear into the number of close and high ranking officers the American president has fired and the number who have written a book detailing his unfitness for the US presidency. The latest being his former right-hand man, John Bolton. These supporters cannot come to the simple conclusions that all these officials who have left Trump cannot be all wrong and Trump is the only one right. In Nigeria, the likes of veteran journalist Tony Momoh who said we should stone them if Buhari does not deliver on his campaign promises are presently living in shame if they are not shameless. Professor Itse Sagay would be regretting and cursing the day he decided to be on the side of this administration because this legal luminary is now seen as a common sycophant. The late Tam David-West most likely died in regrets with a forever tainted memory in the minds of Nigerians and Niger Deltans. If Babatunde Fashola had returned to his legal practice after Tinubu tried to disgrace him, he would have been a happy man now with his reputation intact. The lists go on and on including those presently serving in the cabinet of governors like Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

With all this evidences, it will still amaze you that many Nigerian technocrats like Prof. Pat Utomi who have built their reputation with diligence will still accept a juicy or non-juicy position from Muhammadu Buhari. And the result is always the same – destroyed reputation, weeping and gnashing of teeth. So, as we continue to read about the political turbulence going on in the polity, continue to take notes of those who cannot delay gratification by refusing appointments from this administration. Because after soiling their name, they will rebrand themselves as born again politicians. They will attend Conventions and Congresses. They will be granted a paid audience in Chatham House to convince us of their new ways of thinking. And they will float foundations that hypocritically and superficially meet the needs of the needy. We must not be deceived. No sensible harlot gives free service to an incompetent client twice.
