Trump And Buhari Without Religion

Trump And Buhari

In an age where fact-checking is a few clicks away, many of us prefer to wallow in an ocean of half-truths, fake news, and complete falsehood if the information is emanating from our favourite candidate. I lack words to describe the incredulity I experience whenever this phenomenon happens with sensible Christians who are Trump supporters. Trump has left no one in doubt about his character or characteristics as a Christian. Where his sympathies lie regarding racial issues. And where is interest is invested between saving lives with medical science or incorrect homilies and beliefs. Muhammadu Buhari has a similar following that is even more incredulous. Many of his supporters intentionally wallow in the illusion that he is not corrupt with clear evidence to the contrary. His support for everything Fulani or Islamic does not elicit their apprehension because of religious or ethnic biases.

One can still somewhat understand why conservative Christians would want Donald Trump to have a second term because above everything, many of their decisions are guided by what America would become under the Democrats who they believe view everything increasingly through the prism of the LGBTQ community. Their fear that the United States of America will become a godless nation is not fake news like some of Donald Trump’s posts. Their fear that the already destroyed traditional family structure would suffer irreparable disfigurement is very real. When missionaries brought Christianity to the hinterlands of Africa, they thought Africans that Sodomy was what made God destroy Sodom and Gomora. Not long ago the Obama administration working in tandem with his European counterparts worked tirelessly to deny Goodluck Jonathan a second term because Jonathan refused to succumb to Western pressure to decriminalize homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

For Buhari’s supporters, their motivations are hard to comprehend because his supporters have less ideological motivation. Unlike Trump who has been able to sustain the record run of job creation that started in the Obama administration, Buhari has sent Nigeria more backward in 5 years than the 16 years of PDP rule. The piling debt is dizzying. Its like Buhari and his cronies are in tune with Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s prediction of rapture in the next 10 years and they are stockpiling money for the tribulation that will follow. If you are a Trump supporter would you still support him if he is a Muslim based on his conduct as a president in the last 4 years? Or would you still be rooting for Buhari if he is a Christian? Your answer speaks volumes of your bias that is costing Nigeria dearly.
