Nigerian singer Rema has not just achieved a major feat in his career, he has set a new record. His hit track, ‘Calm Down’ has surpassed 400 million views on Youtube, making him the first Afrobeat artiste to do so. The song is part of his debut studio album, Rave and Rose, which was released earlier in the year 2022.
This is not the first time the song is making waves. It will be recalled that in December 2022, ‘Calm Down’ almost reached 300 million views. The song charted across Europe, reaching number one on the Belgian Ultratop 50, Dutch Top 40 and Dutch Single Top 100.
The Mavin record singer also released a remix with American singer, Selena Gomez on 25 August 2022, which was most streamed Afro-beat song that year. The new version reached number one on both the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs and the Billboard Global Excl. US charts, and peaked at number three on the Global 200 chart.
Rema himself once revealed how the song came about in an interview with Pitchfork, an online music publication:
“Calm Down” is about the events that led me to finding love at the time. It started at a party where I saw a girl who stood out from other girls so I felt like shooting my shot. We spoke and danced… but her friends didn’t let me get any closer which killed the vibe, but afterwards when they weren’t there, we stayed in touch and hit it off.
